Last week in my English class we participated in an interesting activity. We looked at a painting, and then were told to write a story about it. But, we wrote the story while listening to five different songs, one after another. Then we had to write an adjective by each of the five sections that we wrote. After we finished and read another student’s story. To simplify the purpose of this lesson, basically we had to see how the music affected our writing. This lesson reaffirmed something I have known for most of my life now; Music affects everyone. Music can change a person’s mood drastically. It can have effects that are unintended and unpredictable, as everyone takes a song differently due to previous life experiences and musical taste. One of my friends never listens to rapper 50 Cent, because he was listening to a 50 Cent song when he was told his grandmother had died. One of my favorite albums of all-time is The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by artist Lauryn Hill. But I almost never listen to any song on the album because of how emotionally powerful it is. I know that when I listen to that album, my mood will shift and I will become introspective and thoughtful, but also quiet and reserved for a few hours. When anybody picks a song on their iPod or MP3 player, they pick a song that sums up their mood at that time. You can tell how a person feels just by their song choice. This method is not scientific or foolproof by any means, but if you know someone personally then you can get a measure of their mood. Nobody feels tired and then goes and blasts Green Day as loud as they can while yawning. When you go out with your friends, you only play certain songs in the car. The point is, that you can manipulate emotions through music. This is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact I rather enjoy using music to change the attitude of other people. And when you feel great, there is nothing better to do then relax and find a good song to vibe to. Some of the best memories of my life were created with me and my closest friends just sitting around and enjoying to music. Music can help you find happiness, which is what we all strive for in life.
Panopticism by Michel Foucalt was one of the most disturbing literary pieces that I have ever read. My initial reaction was of confusion, and as I began to understand the meaning of the work I slowly became disgusted. I awaited for the sentence where Foucault would say ‘April Fools’ but it never came. He was genuinely advocating the entrapment of the panopticon to be implemented into everyday society, for other structures such as schools and hospitals to become panopticons. Foucault genuinely believed that the benefits of the cruelly efficient panopticon to outweigh the negatives. One of the things that is most terrifying to me about Panopticism is how downplayed the negatives of the panopticon is downplayed. Their is a reason why it was used as a prison structure originally, and not as a tool against everyday citizens. The panopticon would, in effect, destroy social interaction as we now know it. People would live in constant fear and apprehension from their unknown supervisors. The parallels between this society and that of the nightmarish society in the novel 1984 by George Orwell are almost to easy to draw. The panoptic structure essential leaves the prisoner with no sense of privacy or security. To their knowledge, they are stripped bare and left with no where to hide. All of their actions are seen and all their words are heard. The prisoner is left with nowhere to express them self but for the inside of their mind. No communication with other prisoners are allowed. This effect is understated, but remember that in prison, taking a prisoner away from other prisoners to solitary confinement is considered a worse alternative than being accompanied by murders, rapists, and robbers. The workers, schoolchildren, or other ordinary members of society are left with nothing to do but what they are assigned. The workers work. the students learn, and the cleaners clean. One can only imagine the monotony. People are essentially left with no other alternative but to do their part to aid society. But they do so at the cost of interpersonal relationship, artistic expression, collaborative work, privacy, sense of self, and freedom as a whole. And he proposes this as an alternative society? Who would willingly strip human beings of their basic rights simply to make society more efficient? Maybe society now is damaged, by a panoptic society would take away the few positives we have now.
